Nancy Meckler

Nancy Meckler is a pioneer female director in the British theatre. The first woman to direct at the National Theatre, she alone amongst her gender peers has maintained a career through six decades, an astonishingly eclectic career that encompasses ground-breaking companies such as Shared Experience and the Freehold Theatre Company, Broadway, the British regions, the West End, The Royal Shakespeare Company, the London fringe, the Royal Court and Sadler’s Wells. She quietly paved the way for generations of women directors, at the same time creating work of provocative originality and beauty. Her career includes theatre, film, teaching, and most recently writing.

Notes from the Rehearsal Room

“Ever wondered what happens on the other side of that door with the sign warning ‘Rehearsals in process. Do Not Enter.’ Well, director Nancy Meckler graciously opens this door and invites you into her remarkable process. She brings this often mysterious endeavor refreshingly back down to earth while still inspiring all of us to shoot for the moon. A must-read for anyone who loves theatre and how we go about making it.”
